Researchers and Collaborators

The research team responsible for the collection Shakespeare in Polish by UW – 20th and 21st Century Module came together to work on the project Repository of Polish Translations of Shakespeare’s Plays in the 20th and 21st Centuries: Resources, Approaches, Reception (UMO–2017/27/B/HS2/00853), financed by the National Science Centre and completed between 2018 and 2024 in the Faculty of Modern Languages at Warsaw University.

The project was managed by Professor Anna Cetera-Włodarczyk, whereas the other team members were doctoral students: Anna Jaworska (between October 2018 and September 2019), Mateusz Godlewski (from 2020 until June 2021) and Przemysław Pożar (throughout the whole project).

The project was the continuation of a related undertaking Repository of Polish Translations of Shakespeare’s Plays in the 19th Century: Resources, Approaches, Reception (UMO-2015/17/B/HS2/01784), financed by the National Science Centre and carried out under the direction of Professor Anna Cetera-Włodarczyk between 2016 and 2019. The team members were doctoral students: Alicja Kosim (throughout the whole project) and Marta Radwańska (from 2016 until January 2017). In March 2019 both teams created the research group Shakespeare in Culture affiliated to the Faculty of Modern Languages at Warsaw University.

From December 2016 there was close collaboration with the Digital Competence Centre at Warsaw University, which handled the digital infrastructure for both Projects. The work was carried out by Ewa Serafin-Prusator, Wojciech Karpiński, Dominik Purchała and Marcin Wilkowski.

The graphic designer for all elements of the collection Shakespeare in Polish is Dr Mateusz Kowalski of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. Texts in the English version of the repository interface are translated by Jonathan Baines and Dr Piotr Szymczak (Faculty of Applied Linguistics at Warsaw University). Acknowledgements

The collection Shakespeare in Polish by UW comprises thousands of pages and reflects not only the large number of translations, but also the multiplicity of editorial and publishing approaches, and – notwithstanding the easy access provided by digitalisation – the material conditions of the publications, whose pages are now yellow and brittle with age.

We warmly thank Martyna Marcinkowska from the National Library (Biblioteka Narodowa) for her invaluable help in digitalising the Shakespeare collections, and also Professor Maciej Buszewicz, for a font that brings the feel of paper to these digital files.

Acknowledgements

Sincere thanks go to Ryszard Długołęcki, Piotr Kamiński and Władysław Zawistowski. Also to the descendants of Zofia Siwicka, Roman Brandstaetter, Bohdan Drozdowski, Stanisław Dygat, Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz, Czesław Jastrzębiec-Kozłowski, Juliusz Kydryński, Włodzimierz Lewik, Jerzy Limon and Jerzy Sito, for agreeing to share the digital versions of the translations.

We also thank all the translators and their descendants for access to pictures from private archives.
